Abstract
This chapter covers the spectrum of lesions of the soft tissues of the mouth that may arise in children or adolescents. The contents are presented from a clinical standpoint with representative color photographs, discussing presentation, diagnostics, and treatment. The structured chapter starts with common oral mucosal abnormalities, reactive overgrowths, and vascular malformations. Common causes of oral ulceration (e.g. traumatic, aphthae) as well as ulceration secondary to systemic and infectious disease (e.g. herpes simplex) are discussed as well as infection that gives rise to white or red areas (e.g. candidiasis). There follows discussion of haematological disease , including aspects of relevant malignancy and bleeding disorders. Finally there is discussion of salivary gland disease relevant to children and/or adolescents.
