Abstract
Autologous fat grafting is a popular and safe technique with a low complication rate and being used frequently for volume augmentation and improvement of damaged tissues. However, unpredictability of fat graft survival remains as a limitation and many methods have been proposed to overcome this problem. In order to increase the chance of fat graft survival we are using a technique being known as stem cell-enriched tissue transfer (SET) or cell-assisted lipotransfer (CAL) where lipoaspirate is being enriched with autogenous stromal vascular fraction (SVF).
From a safety standpoint, our 10-year experience confirms that SET does not enhance the risk of cancer development or accelerate the evolution of an undiscovered tumor. Of course, this observation does not negate the potential hazards associated with SVF cell yield injections, which have been hypothesized based on in vitro investigations of adiposederived stem cell (ASC) trophic factors and their effects in co-cultures with breast cancer cells. As conclusion, SVF enrichment provides a far more approachable and practical alternative to traditional fat grafting, with 30–50% of stromal vascular cells extracted.
