Abstract

Many of today’s youth, including those in Central and South America, are integrating local identities based on familial, community, and religious traditions with global identities fueled by exposure to international media. Extant literature was categorized according to the four different domains of identity – personal, relational, public, and collective – postulated by Cheek and Cheek (2018) and according to whether the study addressed traditional/heritage identity or a dual/hybrid identity (Jensen & Arnett, 2012). The review revealed that for Latin American youth, (a) collective identities, including national, political, and ethnic identities are fundamental concerns; (b) interpersonal relations play a central role in identity development; and (c) exposure to globalization and international media has led many to construct complex hybrid or remixed identities. Future studies should address the processes, antecedents, and consequences of identity development, especially hybrid identities, and the diversity of developmental contexts of Latin American youth, including economic, ethnic, national, and cultural differences.
