Microbial Biofertilizers and Micronutrient Availability

Abstract

Nutrient deficiencies are a major issue worldwide. Microorganisms can affect plant nutrition and may form the backbone of fortification strategies ensuring high nutritional values of grains and vegetables. However, to date it remains hard to harness this power. We surmise that this difficulty stems from the multiple different mechanisms involved in nutrition. Here, we review the different ways that microorganisms use to impact plant growth. (1) Nutrient mineralization, enzymes, and siderophores. (2) Nutrient mobilization, for instance, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). (3) Manipulation of plant nutrient uptake, by plant hormones or production of physical layer around the roots. (4) Manipulation of plant nutrient translocation. We will review here how these different mechanisms are intertwined in the soil microbiome and how they may serve as multiple leverage points to enhance microbiome function and plant nutrition. Together, these mechanisms may form the base of a sustainable and nutritious agriculture.
