Abstract
Substance use disorders (SUD) cause serious public health problems in Brazil and worldwide. Among the existing psychosocial treatments for SUD, behavioral and/or cognitive-based treatments show the highest evidence of efficacy. Among these, contingency management (CM) applied to SUD is one of the most effective psychosocial treatments in promoting adherence to treatment, reducing substance use, and promoting continued abstinence from several substances. In this chapter, we make an in-depth description of CM, where we describe the theoretical and experimental bases of CM and present the methodological components necessary to ensure the proper application of CM. Next, we present the main findings related to the efficacy of the CM obtained in randomized controlled trials and meta-analysis performed in the USA, as well as the results observed in the first CM study performed to evaluate the efficacy of this treatment for crack-cocaine use disorders in Brazil. Finally, in order to elucidate how CM may be absorbed in the clinical practice, we present a case study in which CM was effectively implemented in the treatment of marijuana use disorder.
