Abstract
AABB Standards have played a vital role in assisting blood centers and transfusion services to achieve regulatory compliance. These Standards have subsequently expanded to cover the field of cellular therapies. This chapter will provide a history of blood banking and transfusion service practices and the events leading up to the need to regulate cellular therapy activities. It will also explore how the quality management system approach to regulatory compliance has been applied to the development of the AABB Standards for Cellular Therapies and accreditation program.
