Abstract
I met Steve in 1976 when he was teaching a short course at the JSM on Discrete Multivariate Analysis with Yvonne Bishop and Paul Holland – though Steve insisted that we were together several years earlier – in the late 1960s at a planning meeting for what later became the bookStatistics: a Guide to the Unknown (SAGTU). I have no recollection of meeting him there, but then I was so dazzled at being at that meeting at the invitation of Fred Mosteller that I probably would not have registered the appearance of anything short of a lightning strike.
