Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease worldwide that develops in men older than 40 years. It is also known as disease of aging men. The prevalence of BPH increases with age and varies in different regions of the world. Inflammation, hormonal alterations, metabolic factors, and age-related remodeling process contribute in pathophysiology of BPH. Common symptoms of BPH include nocturia, urinary urgency, weak stream of urine, dribbling, and incomplete bladder emptying. Aging, family history, and metabolic disorders are risk factors for BPH. Complications include bladder stones, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and bladder and kidney damage. International prostate symptom score (IPSS), digital rectal examination (DRE), and post-void residual urine volume (PVR) are recommended tests for diagnosis of BPH. BPH can be treated through surveillance, medical therapy, and various surgical procedures. The aim of this chapter is to describe BPH with its complications, epidemiology, management, interventions, recommendation, and guidelines in context of developing countries.
