Abstract
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are extremely common and will only increase as our population continues to age. Recent reports reveal nearly one in two adults in the United States has a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD), and up to 20% of primary care office visits are for musculoskeletal complaints. Current management of MSD results in a high economic burden, due to both direct costs to the healthcare system and indirect costs to the economy. For healthcare providers confronted with musculoskeletal complaints, it is important to establish and follow a practical, evidence-based framework for treatment. Three of the most common MSD are low back pain, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis and fracture. In this chapter, we provide evidence-based data and recommendations for how to diagnose and treat patients suffering from these common MSD.
