Abstract
This chapter examines the impact of the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 on the fundamental right to education. School closures and the transition to online learning have worsened the pre-existing digital divide and educational inequalities. We discuss how students with limited or no access to internet connectivity and necessary digital equipment were the most severely affected by these changes. We conclude by repeating the need for digital equity as an inherent aspect of the right to education.
COVID-19 is a test for our societies, and we are all learning and adapting as we respond to the virus. Human dignity and rights need to be front and center in that effort, not an afterthought.
