Abstract
Berberis lycium is a medicinally and economically important species of the family Berberidaceae. It is found in different countries of the world. In Pakistan, the species is widely distributed in mountainous ranges, mainly in the west Himalayan region and Kashmir. In herbal formulations, it has great importance due to the presence of berberine. In the traditional system of medication, different parts of the plant have been used in the treatment of different diseases. In Azad Kashmir, its mixture is used to treat intestinal colic, pharyngitis, urine problems, jaundice, eye disease, piles, diarrhea, and ophthalmia. Pharmacological studies have shown that this plant has an antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antihyperlipidemic, hepatoprotective, and wound healing properties. All parts of the plant are of medicinal value. In Pakistan, root bark powder is taken in different forms orally. It shows antioxidant property because of anthocyanins and tannins. Further research is needed in the extraction, identification, and isolation of berberine as an active compound using root bark of Berberis lycium.
