Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Rheumatology Review

Abstract

Systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus are multisystem diseases with a significant burden of musculoskeletal involvement. Ultrasound is increasingly being utilized in these conditions for clinical diagnosis, decision-making, and disease monitoring and to better understand the pathologic mechanisms that underlie peripheral disease manifestations. We review the use of ultrasound in these two conditions, including vast applications that extend beyond typical joint and soft tissue evaluations, particularly in systemic sclerosis. These include pulmonary, skin, and peripheral vascular ultrasound. There is great promise for sonography in both research endeavors and clinical management.
