Women's Mood Disorders

Abstract

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are common complications in both pregnancy and the postpartum period. The effects of untreated suicidality are multifold for the mother-baby dyad and society at large. Clinicians caring for this population are best able to provide targeted interventions to address these concerns when well versed in the various presentation characteristics that can occur, including nuanced risk and protective factors. This chapter serves to provide the reader with a greater understanding of the complex nature of suicidality in the pregnant or postpartum woman and further provides recommendations in order to best evaluate for and treat suicidal ideation and behaviors.
