Abstract

Human sex trafficking is undoubtedly a crime against humanity. The confluence of trafficking and homelessness is more complex than what could be superficially understood by common sense. This chapter focuses on defining the problem of sex trafficking specifically and offers an overview of the current understanding of this problematic.

The statistics show that sex trafficking is highly prevalent in the homeless population and constitutes an important public health with implications for the criminal justice system. By the end of this chapter, the reader will be able to understand international and national trends and regulations. The chapter offers information on how to identify victims and perpetrators with special attention to the understanding of how to engage the victim. Legislature advances and advocacy efforts are briefly discussed.
