Abstract
Online social networks (OSNs) are now the most common and interactive media for many users. Most people engaged with social media without stopping to think about these networks’ effects on our lives, whether positive or negative. However, along with useful and exciting content, sometimes unsuitable or abusive content can be published on these networks, such as cyberbullying and insults. Many social networking sites (SNSs) have responded to the call to prevent the spread of online harassment by launching online reporting systems on their platforms, such as the Facebook reporting system. This paper will conduct a study to provide descriptive information about the usage, privacy, reporting system, and cyberbullying among Facebook users in Egypt. We focus on demographic differences in reporting systems and privacy awareness. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluates whether the Egyptian Facebook users pay attention, understand and act on the reporting system and measure the extent of users’ satisfaction with the reporting systems. We conducted an online survey and collect data from 273 Facebook users. The majority of the respondents indicated that Facebook is a part of their lives and daily routine. Concerning the awareness of the privacy settings, the study demonstrated that users are aware of the privacy settings. Also, the study demonstrated that users are aware of the reporting system and act on it. Still, at the same time, they may resort to other easy tools to express their rejection of the content, such as using “emotions” or “block” features. Finally, the study investigated cyberbullying on Facebook, and the results showed that impersonation, spreading rumors, receiving abusive words, pornographic images, offensive text messages, and sexual exploitation are the most common forms of cyberbullying that Facebook users are exposed. Also, we found that females and youth are the most vulnerable to such forms.
