Abstract
People meet at different places and for different reasons, and those with common interests usually interact and have something to share – this is the traditional model of social networking. Although social networking occurs in a virtual world, it has positively transformed communication in several aspects of our life like education, business, healthcare, government and so on. However, social networking has increased the exposure of private lives, the nuisance of unsolicited chat messages, and unhealthy cyber monitoring. This study aims to investigate the privacy concerns and awareness of social media privacy policies amongst computer science students by presenting a review of some of the privacy challenges with using social networking applications. We further carried out an online survey to collect data on their views by investigating their understanding and usage of privacy settings on their preferred platforms. Our participants were found to mostly use Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, and results show that only 23.8% read the privacy agreement. About 30.1% and 13.3% accept friend requests from the friend of friends and strangers respectively. Also, 89.2% of users have their privacy features enabled and 82.9% indicates satisfaction with the current privacy settings available on their social media sites which may be the reason only 54.2% of users show a high level of concern about their privacy.
