Abstract
One perspective suggests that Gaza’s political economy has always been characterized by blockade, aid dependency and lack of resources, which has made economic development within the territory far more challenging. The initial debate following Hamas’ victory in the parliamentary election in 2006 was a key opportunity for the movement to introduce political and economic agendas that would augment the movement’s popularity internally and externally. However, the political developments that occurred afterward have led to structural transformations as to how Gaza’s political economy is characterized, with particular interest to the emergence of tunnel economy, the decline of Gaza’s traditional private sector, the rise of a Hamas-led private sector, and the structural imbalances that have surfaced as a result of the new political and economic dynamics. Accordingly, this chapter examines the ways Gaza’s political economy has transformed since 2006 onwards.
