Abstract

This chapter addresses the diagnostic dilemmas encountered in everyday practice of surgical pathology regarding diseases affecting the female peritoneum. The disorders covered in this chapter range from inflammatory and nonneoplastic to benign and malignant tumors. Diagnostic considerations for conditions ranging from atypical endometriosis and atypical endosalpingiosis to small blue cell and spindle cell lesions in peritoneal biopsies are discussed. Problems related to differentiation of mesothelioma from benign mesothelial proliferations and carcinoma are addressed. Primary peritoneal carcinoma, secondary cancers in the peritoneum, and pseudomyxoma peritonei are also discussed.
