Abstract
What it means to age both into disability and with disability is a complex topic in research, policy, and in service delivery. Scholarship regarding aging and disability has historically developed as distinct disciplines: gerontology informing aging and biomedicine and disability studies providing diverse perspectives on disability. With population aging, the health care needs of people with disabilities will become more complex over time. The experience of disability and aging is multifactorial and dependent on wider social, cultural, structural, and environmental factors. As such, examining the connections between disability and aging may contribute to more nuanced understandings to improve well-being and quality of life and enhance service provision. The purpose of this chapter is to examine three key aspects of this intersection of disability and aging: Firstly, within the “successful aging” framework, older people with disabilities face stigma and stereotyping. It will then contest gerontological approaches to aging which focus on physical functioning in later life as a marker of success in aging. Secondly, there is a need to examine how the emphasis on normative trajectories of age-related impairment elides the significant additional risk and insecurity experienced by those aging in precarious circumstances, who are also more likely to be disabled. Finally, two frameworks are proposed here: Sen’s capability approach and purpose in life for advancing scholarship on aging and disability. These frameworks have the potential to contribute to theory, policy, and practice in aging and disability.
