Abstract
Consideration of the correlation between land surface temperature and vegetation cover is extremely significant in managing semi-arid regions. However, information on how environmental features influence the land surface temperature (LST) and vegetation cover in semi-arid regions is lacking because of variations in climate change factors. This chapter examines the application of remote sensing and GIS for correlations between the LST and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), assessing its influence on the Nagapattinam region. The LST was obtained from Landsat thematic mapper (TM) and thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing (RS) data for monitoring LST and its variations in different periods (1995–2015). Areas such as Nagapattinam, Akkaraipettai, Samanthanapettai, Velankkani, Vizunthamavadi, Vettaikaraniruppu, Thirupundi, Thalainayar, Karapidagai, Kovilpathu, Thirukuvalai, Manakkudi, Thittacheri, Melvalakkarai, and Keeramber experience high temperature changes. A growing movement in temperature is attributed due to anthropogenic activities, aquaculture, and saltpan activities on the coastal environment of Nagapattinam. Climate results show that the average annual maximum temperature varies from 32.11 to 33.35 °C, the minimum temperature varies from 24.58 to 25.60 °C, the average rainfall range is 265.6 to 250.6 mm, and the relative humidity varies from 73.60% to 79.44%. In October 2010 NDVI maps of the study area showed that vegetation cover in the area had decreased during the period 1995–2010 but later on, from June 2015, it increased slightly in areas like Ambal, Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Panakkudi, Puthagaram, Palaiyur, Tirupundi, Vilunthamavadi, and Vettaikaraniruppu.
