Abstract

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term for different neurodevelopmental disorders linked to prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). FASD has a high prevalence, estimated to be 1–3%, but the variance is large between countries (0.1–10%). Early diagnosis and intervention aimed at primary symptoms may prevent secondary disabilities and improve outcome. The complex clinical picture presented in children and adolescents with FASD commands multidisciplinary assessment as basis for intervention planning. The complexity results in high direct and indirect cost for families and society. Interventions discussed in this chapter focus on learning disabilities, low IQ, attention/executive functions, adaptive behavior, and behavioral challenges that have a high prevalence in FASD.
