Abstract

Methamphetamine use continues to be on the rise in the United States and other countries, significantly impacting gay and bisexual men (GBM). The consequences of use can lead to worsening health outcomes and threaten public health efforts (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention). This chapter provides an overview of the research on methamphetamine use among GBM. First, we describe the epidemiology of methamphetamine use among GBM in the United States and globally, with a particular focus on racial and ethnic minority GBM to highlight intersecting disparities. Second, we detail the psychosocial and contextual factors that potentiate methamphetamine use among GBM, including individual- (e.g., depression, anxiety, internalized stigma), interpersonal- (e.g., discrimination, social support), and structural-level (e.g., socioeconomic marginalization) factors. Third, we describe the health and social consequences of methamphetamine use among GBM, including chronic and infectious disease risk and incarceration. Finally, we discuss current psychosocial and pharmacological treatment options aimed at GBM with stimulant use disorder.
