Abstract
Automation in industries has led to a rapid increase in the overall profit. Through industrial automation, efficient production of goods with reduced labor costs can be obtained. The employment of the Internet of Things (IoT) in industrial automation ensures real-time communication between various industrial devices, objects, processes, and humans. Furthermore, the massive machine-type communication (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) features of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology helped to further enhance the IoT based industrial automation processes. However, there exists the challenge of ensuring trust between the interacting industrial objects. Therefore, blockchain technology was implemented to provide an efficient and secure interaction between different elements. Because of its inherent characteristics of decentralization and immutability, it helped in guaranteeing the data origin and achieving transparency. Thus, leading to the further improvement of IoT based applications in industrial systems. In this chapter, we present a brief introduction to each of these emerging technologies, their impact on industrial automation, and their applications in different industries.
