Acute Type A Aortic Dissection: When Not to Operate

  • Chapter

Aortic Dissection and Acute Aortic Syndromes

Abstract

Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a surgical emergency which carries an operative mortality of 10–30% in multiple series, a rate which has not decreased meaningfully over the past 15 years. This lack of improvement in outcomes over time has prompted increasing investigation into identification of risks of mortality in ATAAD with and without repair. In this chapter, we review contemporary approaches to risk stratification of ATAAD patients with a focus on when to delay or defer central aortic repair.
