Adaptive Behavior Strategies for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Abstract

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities often experience significant communication impairment. A number of research-based intervention approaches have been developed for addressing these deficits and teaching communication skills to such individuals. Contemporary evidence-based approaches for teaching communication skills to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities include Applied Verbal Behavior, Functional Communication Training, and Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions. This chapter opens with a definition of communication and an overview of the communication difficulties associated with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is followed by a brief summary of historical antecedents to contemporary approaches for teaching communication skills to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The bulk of the chapter consists of outlining the characteristics of Applied Verbal Behavior, Functional Communication Training, and Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions. Key studies illustrating the application of each approach are reviewed. These three approaches can be seen as refinements of earlier behaviorally based communication intervention programs.
