Abstract

Gastrointestinal infections are common with an enormous negative impact on public health throughout the world. Despite a global incidence, they occur more frequently in underdeveloped or developing countries. The organisms associated with such infections are ubiquitous. Periodic outbreaks and epidemics represent a significant burden to society. The majority of infections are transmitted through the ingestion of contaminated food or water. Most organisms rely on the oral-fecal transmission cycle. Infectious colitidies represent a wide spectrum of conditions that encompasses bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. While most symptomatic patients recover with conservative and medical management, a subset of patients can develop extraintestinal disease in organs such as the liver and/or severe complications such as life-threatening colonic perforation. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of infectious colitidies, especially in immunocompromised patients, can decrease the associated morbidity and mortality.
