Abstract

Orthopaedic practice is broad and wide-ranging. There is a plethora of associated terminology used to describe anything from a fracture pattern or mechanism of injury, to the specifics of the implanted hardware used in fracture fixation or orthopaedic operations. While inclusion of a glossary may seem superfluous, the sheer number of terms and acronyms used can often seem confusing and overwhelming to those not involved in day-to-day orthopaedic practice.

Here, we present a list of frequently used terms and acronyms utilised currently by our Paediatric Orthopaedic colleagues. This list is by no means exhaustive, but we hope it is comprehensive enough to provide a go-to source of information for use in every day clinical practice. Its purpose is to help better understand the terminology used in describing the injuries and subsequent management received by our patients.
