Abstract
Muslims have always regarded themselves as a single Community (the Ummah), beyond national borders, as evidenced by their mutual assistance in all fields: economic, political, and even military. However, given the global coalition against terrorists that claim to act on behalf of Islam, Muslims around the world have had to defend certain national identities and interests. Moreover, they now need to talk about the use of violence for political purposes and distinguish between religion and politics. This is especially evident in Europe, where Muslim minorities have been at the epicenter of social and media debate for the last two decades. The main goal of this chapter is to analyze the evolution of this Muslim population in Europe that has created a new and distinct European and Muslim culture, different from their countries of origin.
