Abstract
Lipids are an organic compounds group that plays a key role in different physiological and biochemical processes. In the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, lipids have been used in the preparation of different nanostructures such as nanoemulsions, microemulsions, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and liquid crystal nanodispersions. The evolution in the production and characterization of lipid nanocarriers has made it possible to encapsulate numerous molecules that can be administered by various routes. Different products with lipid nanocarriers are already on the market. The type and composition of lipid nanostructures, as well as physical-chemical properties, affect their ability to encapsulate molecules, their biodistribution, cell internalization, administration route, and toxicity. In this chapter, different lipid nanocarriers will be discussed with a focus on their composition and structure, preparation method, and their applications in the pharmaceutical area.
