Abstract
Rupture of the distal biceps tendon is an uncommon injury. Nonoperative management of distal biceps ruptures frequently results in strength, endurance, and range of motion deficits of the elbow long after the injury. Superior outcomes have been found with surgical intervention, making it the preferred method of management for these injuries. Rehabilitation follows a sequential and progressive, multi-phased approach in order to achieve successful outcomes. The repair is initially protected by a brief period of elbow immobilization followed by a gradual increase in range of motion as healing progresses. The focus of rehabilitation is on normalizing range of motion, strength, endurance, neuromuscular control, and power while avoiding overstressing the healing tissue. This chapter outlines and describes the systematic progression for rehabilitating the distal biceps tendon following surgical repair.
