1 Signs and Symptoms
Floaters, flashing lights, decreased visual acuity, and/or visual field defect in the affected eye. A pigmented mass under the conjunctiva in case of anterior uveal melanoma, often with an engorged feeder vessel. Often there are no characteristic signs for extraocular tumor spread in case of small posterior uveal melanoma. Large extraocular extension of posterior uveal melanoma may present with proptosis, diplopia, vision loss, or pain [1, 2].
2 Differential Diagnosis
Bulging uvea through thin sclera can be seen in cases of chronic elevated intraocular pressure, radiated and controlled ciliary body melanoma with thin overlying sclera, conjunctival melanoma and choroidal lymphoma with extraocular spread, and primary orbital melanoma.
3 Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on typical clinical findings and ultrasonography. Adjunct MR scans are useful in the evaluation of the extraocular portion and involvement of adjacent structures. Uveal melanoma often shows spontaneous...
