Abstract
Among the available interventions in the health area, the therapeutic companion (TC) presents itself as a possibility of active intervention outside the restricted environment of the private practice. The effectiveness of the TC is related to the promotion of social bonds and the guarantee of citizenship of the patients, who through the TC have a greater inclusion in physical and social environments. One of the possible issues for the practice of the TC is in the field of substance dependence. Substance dependence is a complex construct, and its harmfulness ranges from physical health problems to issues in personal, social, and financial relationships. Effective treatment is extensive and multidisciplinary. In this chapter, we describe TC as part of the intervention related to the installation and maintenance of abstinence. Three functions of TC in cases of substance dependence are described: (1) discriminative stimulus for abstinence, (2) assisting in the task of identifying high-risk situations for relapse, and (3) assisting in the process of coping with high-risk situations.
