Abstract

Childhood obesity has become a global epidemic. The World Health Organization estimates that around 41% of children below 5 years are overweight or obese. Long-term health problems of obesity, which were initially seen only in adults, are increasingly seen in children. Lifestyle modifications are shown to be effective only in younger children and at lower body mass index levels.

Increasing data in adolescents has proven the effectiveness of bariatric surgery both for weight reduction as well as comorbidity resolution. In view of this, bariatric surgery is now accepted as a valid treatment option for the obese adolescent population. However, in light of sensitivities around the age and lifelong impact of surgery on this cohort of patients, it is important that they have excellent pre- and postoperative support. This can only be achieved through a multidisciplinary team approach. Guidelines for surgery in the pediatric population have been agreed for some time. However, the age at which patients are considered suitable for surgery has gradually decreased. Sleeve gastrectomy is now the most commonly performed procedure, but Roux-en-Y gastric bypass still remains the gold standard.
