Obesity, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Abstract

Bariatric and metabolic surgery is becoming more common worldwide as a treatment for severe and complex obesity. Specific physiological and pathological factors may affect the perioperative outcome of these patients. Knowledge of these conditions and particular aspects of perioperative management will help to reduce the potential risks related to bariatric and metabolic surgery.

This chapter discusses the principles of perioperative care in patients undergoing bariatric or metabolic surgery. There is a focus on the evidence from relevant societal guidelines and the large-scale evidence syntheses to provide the reader with a structured, evidence-based approach to management strategies. The principles discussed here may help to provide a deeper understanding of the potential issues faced in perioperative management of patients receiving bariatric and metabolic surgery and may provide a basis to develop local management protocols to reduce perioperative risks.
