Abstract

Large disparities exist in cleft care around the world, and quality improvement efforts have been limited by a lack of cleft-specific outcomes reporting instruments. In this chapter, we describe two recently developed tools designed to equip surgeons with effective, replicable ways to report outcomes after cleft lip and palate surgery. First, the Operation Smile Surgical Outcomes Evaluation scale assesses aesthetic outcomes after unilateral cleft lip repair and can be used by nonmedical personnel, making it useful in resource-limited settings. Second, the CLEFT-Q uses patient-reported outcomes to evaluate aspects of cleft-related quality of life that are often missed by observer-reported analyses.
