Abstract

Education of local providers is key to increasing access to surgical services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

  • International collaborations have a role in helping to augment local training systems.

  • Such collaborative educational models can be categorized into short-term trips, long-term partnerships, and self-contained hospitals.

  • Review and analysis of ongoing programs is important to critically evaluate strengths and limitations across different models, coordinate efforts, and share best practices.
