Biomedical Informatics

Abstract

The role of people and their caregivers in the healthcare system has greatly expanded in the past two decades, and continues to expand, making more pervasive the impact of biomedical informatics on the person seeking information or care. This chapter introduces the important concept of personal health informatics, encompassing patient engagement, empowerment, activation, health information and decision-making, patient generated health data, the digital self, and the digital divide. We describe how the role of the person has evolved, and how personal health informatics broadly impacts both the person and the field of biomedical informatics--from tools such as Electronic Health Records (EHRs), clinical decision support, and phone-based apps, to subject areas such as data science, human computer interaction, and evaluation. We conclude this chapter by describing some of the future opportunities and challenges including industry’s role in personal health informatics, innovation, and the future of how personal health informatics will play a role in the different healthcare settings.
