The Complex Issues of the Perinatal Woman Experiencing Homelessness

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Complex Social Issues and the Perinatal Woman

Abstract

Research surrounding the experiences and impact of women experiencing homelessness during pregnancy is limited, yet the impact of an out-of-home situation on the mother and developing child is far-reaching affecting physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The legal duty placed on public bodies through the Homelessness Reduction Act to refer people who are at risk of becoming or actually homeless extends to maternity services, yet there is little guidance for midwives on how to support pregnant women experiencing homelessness. Under the umbrella term of homelessness, we will consider not only women residing in hostels or experiencing street homelessness but those living in insecure or inadequate accommodation. Conceptualising homelessness in this way offers a more inclusive approach, highlighting that homelessness is not limited to people living rough and therefore publicly more visible (Amore et al. European Journal of Homelessness. 5:19–37, 2011) but that the impact is far more reaching and detrimental than simply requiring a roof over one’s head. This chapter is an exploration of the legal frameworks and social issues that influence the pathway that the pregnant woman may take through homelessness and the effect an out-of-home situation has on the pregnancy, birth outcomes and child development and offers recommendations for good clinical practice within maternity services.
