Abstract

There is a growing demand for facelift due to social acceptance since every person later in life definitely will present indication for it. Some of them will undergo facial rejuvenation. Although it has proved eminently beneficial for patients and surgeons alike, it should not be considered due to highlighted potential psychological pitfalls. Therefore selection of patients for facial rejuvenation surgery requires assessment of his physical defect in the context of his emotional state, sociocultural background, self-motivations, and expectations of the surgical results. People with apparently insignificant facial deformities may attribute special reference and a great problem which should be carefully evaluated preoperatively. Each patient has the right and freedom to choose his or her surgeon. On the other hand, all surgeons must be careful on their own personal background for examination under their criteria and motivations for accepting or rejecting patients. It is better to lose a bad patient before performing an operation than to lose him or her after surgery, since sometimes a good surgical result for a surgeon is not good enough for the patient. Although mutual satisfaction sometimes cannot be guaranteed, preoperative consensus based on understanding what the patient perceives and wants, and what the surgeon can recommend feasible technique, may help to minimize possibly conflicting concepts of successful surgical result. Knowledge of the orientations and limitations of other professionals can enable the plastic surgeon to use their services judiciously in making psychosocial evaluations and managing behavioral problems. Traditional reliance on disciplines that stress an individual psychology needs to be augmented by broader perspectives, including those on social cultural aspects (Gonzalez-Ulloa Philosophical views of aging from de bible through Existentialism. In: Gonzalez-Ulloa M, editor. The aging face, vol. 2. Editora Piccin Nuova Libraria; 1987. p. 17–42).
