Abstract
Anti-immigrant right-wing and populist movements have recently strengthened across Europe and North America. In response to rising xenophobia and racism, grassroots movements and civil society organizations have mobilized in solidarity with migrant and refugee newcomers. This introduction draws attention to the important role that grassroots and civil society initiatives play in welcoming newcomers and fostering pluralism and living together. The chapter explains the rational and structure of the book, with Part I exploring concepts of living together (contrapuntality, cosmopolitanism, conviviality and solidarity) to discuss initiatives and movements across Europe. Part II includes chapters written by artists, activists, academics and grassroots and civil society organizations illustrating how living together materializes through arts and museum projects, creative networks and kitchen hubs. The chapter explores such initiatives as alternative sites and forms of exchange that break down boundaries between newcomers and locals, with the aim of fostering more inclusionary ways of living together.
