Abstract

Postnatal depression is a widely studied area, but limited research can be found on the partners of women suffering from PND. This chapter presents how PND results in fathers facing a multidimensional, often challenging and prolonged struggle. They initially find themselves ill-equipped to deal with their partner’s PND as their emotional and physical well-being comes under immense pressure. Communication with their partners breaks down and the couple relationship starts to suffer. Sources of support are not easily identifiable or accessible. The fathers end up having to find their own personal ways of coping with the situation. Significant implications can be identified for both the healthcare practice and service provision to vulnerable individuals as well as for therapeutic work with clients in similar situations.
