Abstract

This chapter traces how populist discourse penetrates the educational sector in Ukraine, and examines two courses textbooks: “Defence of the Homeland” and “Family Values.” “Defence of the Homeland” textbooks are analysed in the editions before and after the beginning of the war in Eastern Ukraine. The 2014 edition of “Family Values” textbooks claimed “authenticity” only for specific groups of people. This was widely debated in public. As a result of these debates, the books lost their approval previously obtained from the Ministry of Education. Although the “Defence of the Homeland” course also reproduces “traditionalist views” and claims for “authentic patriots,” these were not debated. This suggests that such discourses are considered acceptable when it comes to the questions of national and state security at this specific moment of history in Ukraine.
