Abstract
The paper discusses the recent developments in peer-to-peer lending, which is one of the most innovative online-based financial products. Peer-to-peer lending, also known as lending-based crowdfunding, connects donors, supporters, lenders and investors with individuals or companies in search of funds for specific projects. The paper reviews the relevant literature in the field, presents a brief history of this financing method and discusses the main accounting implications of peer-to-peer lending transactions. The evolution and trends of this type of crowdfunding are then investigated by presenting best practice examples and the specific legislation progress in this matter in Europe.
