Abstract
Article 4 of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights presents the principle of benefits and harms: “In applying and advancing scientific knowledge, medical practice and associated technologies, direct and indirect benefits to patients, research participants and other affected individuals should be maximized and any possible harm to such individuals should be minimized.” In fact, this principle advocates two ethical principles that have been constitutive of medical ethics from the beginning of medicine: the principle of beneficence and the principle of non-maleficence.
