Abstract
Although life is of course an intimate and common reality for all of us, the first attempt at defining it was relatively recent and remains controversial. The concept of life did not arise until the early 1800s with the systematization of the new science of biology or the science of life (although the nature of living beings had been studied since Ancient Greece).
