Abstract

Egalitarianism is a philosophical doctrine that is particularly important in sociopolitical and moral thought and characterized by the central role it gives to equality. However, it is not always evident what sort of equality people are referring to or is at stake (what it is that should be equalized). Such a lack of clarity lies at the root of the different types of egalitarianism such as economic or material egalitarianism (all citizens should have equal access to wealth) and legal egalitarianism (all citizens should be subject to the same laws).
