Abstract
Telemedicine is just one type of care delivery. The orthopedic care remains the same as with in-person care; it is just delivered virtually. Research in telemedicine, regardless of specialty, should be assessed based upon the care rendered for the specific orthopedic condition in accordance with the National Quality Forum (NQF) telemedicine framework, which has four domains – access, cost/financial effectiveness, experience, and effectiveness. The impact of any surgical intervention can be assessed exactly as it would be for other types of surgical care. As an example, goals of rehabilitation following hip surgery do not change, based upon the care delivery mechanism. In this chapter, we review the NQF framework and provide some examples as to how it can be applied within orthopedic surgery.
