Abstract
This chapter will map out three key areas for attention in developing contexts, which innovatively applied, may provide a workable platform for integrated research development. However, it is suggested that such a platform will also have broader application and relevance in a global higher education environment undergoing fundamental transformation. These are: niche research foci areas or themes aligned to national socioeconomic challenges and priorities; the targeted development of multi-, inter-, and transciplinary research (MIT) toward more integrated and relevant research outcomes and application; and the deliberate development at higher education institutions, especially those in developmental contexts, of researchers who will form the vanguard of a new cohort who in time, will begin to level the global research playing field and contribute more deliberately to national development.
