Frailty in Older Dialysis Patients

Frailty and Kidney Disease

Abstract

In older patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the issue of frailty emerges as a challenging condition, from multiple points of view: first, CKD is an accelerator of aging (via deleterious processes like protein-energy wasting and chronic inflammation), and this can explain the high prevalence of frailty in this population. Second, identifying risk factors and combating frailty in dialysis patients is important because of the negative impact of frailty on health outcomes: increased risk for falls, hospitalization, dependence/disability leading to greater healthcare costs, decreased quality of life, and death. Management of frailty in dialysis population requires a multidisciplinary approach, with emphasis on comprehensive geriatric assessment, maintaining nutritional status, and individualized physical activity.
