Abstract
Inflammation in its widest context has many diverse cause. Any irritating substance that comes into contact with the mucosa whether it be a gas (smoke), liquid (acids or caustic solutions) or solid (hot or abrasive foods) can result in inflammation. Many of these are discussed later in this chapter. So long as these are not severe irritants, most symptoms will settle following cessation of contact. However the lining of the throat is soft, friable and can easily swell with oedematous exudates and so it is important that assessment is carefully undertaken before sending the patient home.
